Abstract
Women in 19th century Europe were not part, per se, of civil society. Henrik Ibsen and Joaquín Dicenta fought against this state of affairs, although in different ways in a medium with great social repercussion: the theater. This study analyzes from a gender perspective aspects of the work of these two playwrights. Joaquín Dicenta is also vindicated as a standard-bearer in Spain for the defense of women´s rights, in whose claims he went further than Eugenio Sellés.
