The correspondence between Ramón y Cajal and Zacarías Martínez (1864-1933)

Abstract

Zacarías Martínez was born in Baños de Valdearados (Burgos) in 1864. In 1880 applied for admission to the novitiate of the Order of St. Augustine. In 1888 he was ordained priest. By order of his superiors Martinez enrolled at the Faculty of Sciences of the Universidad Central. He chose to pursue a career in Natural and Physical Sciences. For three courses (1890-91, 1891-92 and 1892-93) he got in the scientific world. In the Medical School attended Normal Histology courses which were explained by Cajal, since this subject was common for students of Medicine and Science. Cajal and Martínez subsequently maintained a long relationship and a voluminous correspondence. In 1907 Martínez published La herencia. Hipótesis acerca del sueño. Optimismo científico, with a foreword by Cajal. In 1927 Martínez was appointed Archbishop of Santiago de Compostela. This article analyzes the views of Cajal and Martínez on psychological problems.
