The newspaper “Pueblo”: construction and deconstruction of the “Marisol myth”. An example of journalistic malpractice
Abstract
The newspaper Pueblo, one of Spain's highest-circulation newspapers in the 1960s and 1970s, undertook an undisguised campaign to promote Spanish artist Marisol during her childhood and adolescence, acting in collusion with the movie star's producer. Under an unwritten agreement, the promotion gave journalists full access to the actress, leading to clear interference in her privacy. The end of the contractual relationship between Marisol and her representative in 1972 led the same newspaper to launch a smear campaign against the actress it had once helped to elevate, based on mere rumors, false news, and derogatory opinion articles.
