Abstract

We present a systematic review of research on sports audiovisual media (films, television series, and documentaries), gender, ethnicity, audiences, and health between 2020 and 2025, based on major international databases (Scopus, WoS, Dialnet, PubMed) and national and international doctoral thesis repositories. Using a mixed quantitative and qualitative methodology following the PRISMA model, 270 titles were analysed from an initial sample of 1,234. Results highlight the predominance of studies on U.S. audiovisual products, alongside emerging ethnic and territorial diversity, including Bollywood sports cinema. “Classic” film studies predominate, whereas television studies (series and documentaries) mainly focus on contemporary productions. Findings reveal a significant thematic shift from heroism and nationalism towards gender as the dominant framework, with increasing attention to ethnicity and intersectionality. Trends include research on sports documentaries and their serialisation on streaming platforms, gender studies, qualitative methodologies, and film and gender analysis. Intersectionality emerges as a growing topic. Most studies are English-language scientific articles published in Sport or Communication journals. Health and audience studies remain the least explored areas in sports audiovisual media research.
