The relevance of the human factor and transparency in news production regarding Artificial Intelligence in Spain
Abstract
To promote accountability in the media in light of the growing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), it is essential to understand audiences' opinions on its implementation in news production processes. The aim of the research is to analyse Spanish audiences' perceptions of AI in journalistic processes, addressing factors such as convenience and credibility. The methodology consists of an online survey of a representative sample of 2,004 people residing in Spain, conducted in April 2025. Among the main results, almost half of the Spanish population considers themselves to be unfamiliar or very unfamiliar with AI (46 %), although 77 % are aware that they interact with it on a daily basis. Respondents support the integration of AI in newsrooms, but mainly in support tasks such as translations (50 %), as opposed to directly writing a text (20 %). On the other hand, the human factor stands out as a key element in news consumption: the credibility of a news item verified by a journalist (56 %) is almost double that verified by AI (30 %). Finally, 80 % of participants demand high levels of transparency in the media regarding the use of AI. Significant correlations were found between the perception of AI and level of education, age, or prior familiarity with AI.
