«Bareback time» in Guillume Dustan and Erick Rémès: HIV-positive temporalities, bareback narratives and the (queer) review of the «queer» archives of HIV
Abstract
In this article, we will attempt to demonstrate the existence of a «seropositive time», mediated and conditioned by the emergence, development, transmission, and control of HIV. By examining the cases of the «autopornographic» literature of Guillaume Dustan and Erik Rémès, and their advocacy of bareback sex, we will explore how the «temporal object» narrated in their work is as fundamental as the «metatemporality» in which it is inscribed, both in the time of its publication, during the second major HIV epidemic in France and the emergence of antiretroviral therapies in 1996, and in its current reception from a radically different «seropositive» temporal framework. Based on the theoretical frameworks of the works of Halberstam, Dean, Castiglia and Reed or Esteban Muñoz, among others, we will propose the possibility that this «HIV-positive temporality» can also intertwine the archives created around the very conception, revision and epistemology of the virus.
