Lay sister’s prayer. A study about a converted Jewish woman’s religiosity (Castile, 1487-1490)

Keywords: prayer, lay sister, judaizer, converted Jewish, Inquisitorial trial

Abstract

The article aims to analyse a sentence included as proof of accusation in an inquisitorial trial against Mencía Suárez, lay sister neighbor of Ocaña, who at the end of the 15th century was accused of being a Judaizer. The study brings us closer to the life and beliefs of a converted family woman in which her ancestral legacy meets the spirituality and dominant practices of the society in which she lived.
