The lease of inland saltworks (mallāḥa) according to Andalusi notarial formularies (11th–14th centuries)
Abstract
Despite the importance that salt had during the Andalusian period, both for consumption and for its agricultural, livestock, artisanal, or pharmacological uses, there are a few documents that discuss it or its exploitation. On this occasion, we analyze seven Andalusian notarial forms that regulate the leasing of inland saltworks, which we consider an agricultural activity rather than a mining one, despite the mineral nature of the product. Finally, we present four hypotheses that might justify the scarcity of information in Islamic law treatises.
