Abstract

Expressive reading is the exciting activity of orally interpreting a written message. It is an activity of high educational and cultural value that requires a complex intellectual and communicative process wherein technical skills are involved to voice, interpret and communicate the text in an expressive and nuanced way. Moreover, metacognitive and emotional strategies are required, since it would be impossible to carry out the task properly without them. The aim of this work is to present a theoretical and interdisciplinary review of the set of main skills that define reading competence with the purpose of presenting in a structured way the connections that exist between reading comprehension and expressive reading. The ultimate goal is to provide guidance to teachers in their work of teaching and assessing expressive reading and to motivate students towards effective reading aloud and even towards what we could call artistic reading.
