Cinematographic scenographic of Sigfrido Burmann in the Spanish Filmoteca archive.
Abstract
The German scenographer Sigfrido Burmann introduced and systematized the profession of artistic director in the Spanish cinema, inexistent from the beginnings of the cinema in our country. He applied innovative methods to the sets that he created during his thirty-five year career in film scenery in Spain. The first twenty years (1940-1960) coincided with the period of greatest splendour in the Spanish film industry, thanks to the Valencian production and distribution company CIFESA, with which he collaborated on most of the films as head set designer. His collection of drawings and sketches, which he drew up as part of his scenographic work, is kept in the Collection - Film Museum department of the Filmoteca Española. Through these drawings, we have been able to analyze the scenography he created in his films and the translation of the drawing's flat layout into three-dimensional film space. This is an extraordinary legacy of the non-filmic film heritage, which is essential for studying the artistic direction of our country.
