Abstract

An exhaustive morphological and biometrical study of Hipparion fossil material from Las Casiones locality (Teruel basin, Spain), wich has not been previously described, is presented. These forms are compared with Hipparion concudense, Hipparion gromovae and Hipparion periafricanum from Cerro de la Garita, El Arquillo and Milagros Spanish localities. Hipparion remains from Las Casiones are identified as Hipparion primigenium, Hipparion gromovae and Hipparion periafricanum by their size and morphological characters, and confirmed by bivariate and multivariate analyses. The faunal assemblages indicate a late Turolian age (MN13) for Las Casiones locality.
