The Eco-Cosmopolitanism of the Tremor Festival in the Azores: Soundscapes and Care Communities in São Miguel
Abstract
Tremor is a boutique, alternative music festival held in São Miguel, the largest of nine islands in the Portuguese autonomous region of the Azores in the North Atlantic Ocean. The festival highlights the dynamic realities of human experience through a diverse line-up of performances (of international origin and varied genres) in venues scattering the audience across the island to enjoy and appreciate the richness of its flora and fauna. Specialist travel media describe Tremor as a cutting-edge experience and an ecotourist’s dream, enabling visitors to explore an artistically rich environment that is anything but insular. This article examines the role of sustainability-orientated musical engagement in fostering care communities during Tremor. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in the Azores, this study analyses how Tremor contributes to the region’s cosmopolitan project and utilises sustainability within the musical sphere to rewrite the gendered roles and expectations associated with urban and natural spaces.
