Abstract

The Caribbean is characteristed by its multiculturalism; it is the setting for one of the most complex processes of syncretism and transculturation in Latin America. Music, as both an element of integration and regional differentiation, is very deeply rooted in the collective conscience of the settlers of the Caribbean and is strongly associated with the identity defining the region. The role of the Europeans, after settling on American soil, was determinant in the consolidation of Caribbean musical culture, but no less decisive was the African contribution to the conformation of a variety of types and genres of music that form an important part of the international consumption and dissemination of music today.
