The Development of a Domain Ontology for the Academic Community of the Madrid Conservatoire During the 19th Century
Abstract
This article discusses the development of a domain ontology focusing on the academic community of the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid in the 19th century. Drawing on two sources held at the Conservatorio itself, seven standardised datasets have been constructed, which have served as the basis for building the vocabulary. The ontology, implemented in the Protégé semantic vocabulary editor and developed from these datasets, connects more than 2,700 individuals within a semantically enriched hierarchical structure, optimised for automated inferences. Its usefulness is demonstrated through advanced searches that reveal significant trends, such as the growing presence of women in awards. It also enables users to find, define, narrow down and trace educational journeys across disciplines. Future expansions are planned, incorporating new documentary sources and interconnecting with other 19th-century ontologies of music, with the aim of enriching the digital representation of historical musical knowledge.
