Abstract
A sedimentary model for the the Kimmeridgian ramp, based in a facies analysis carried out in a marginal area of the Iberian basin (Montes Universales, Teruel> is reported in tliis work. Facies distribution within the so-called Kimmerid gian Sequence has restilted in the identification of four systems tracts: <1) LST: marís and sandstones, related te continental siieiclastic input, covered inner and middle ramp areas during the lowstand of sea level episode which ocurred at the Oxfordian-Kimmeridgian boundary; (2> TST: a fast early Kimmeridgian transgression resulted in reduced scdimentary rates and the opening of the sedimentary setting, allowing the growing of coralgal reef in middle ramp arcas; (3)1 IST: a highstand of sea level episode itt the onset of Ihe late Kimmeridgian 18 indicated by the progradation of middle ramp ooiitic sandwaves over the outer ramp micritie facies, which display abundant bioclastie and oolitic storm beds interlayered (i.e, tempestites); (4) FRST: faster progradation of marginaJ areas and offlap geometries at the end of the evolution of the ramp, are interpreted to be deposited during a foreed regressive episode. Middle ramp was aLo covered by coralalgal patch reef (pinnacles) during this episode. The data reported in tbis work gives additional support to the idea that most of the mud accumulated offshore should be originated in the coralgai and oolithic-dominatud núddle aud inner rasnp areas. This mud was suspen ded and resedimented offshore during storms, where it was accumúlated. 0ffshore transport distanees of tbis mud can not be directly measured. Coarse grains (ooids, skeletal grains) are found to be resedimented some 4 Km offshore.Downloads
