Abstract
The Tertiary structure of the northern margin of the Iberian Chain between the Sierra de Arcos and the Montalbán anticline is controlled by both the orientation of the Mesozoic extensional fau¡ts and by the regional detachment levels in the Mesozoic cover and Palaeozoic basement. During the Mesozoic extension, two stages can be defined: 1) during the Valanginian-Hauterivian, the normal faults at the northern part, near the Sierra de Arcos high (with hangingwalls to the south) wcre associated with large rolí-over anticlines in the marine Jurassic series, erosion of the latter being more important toward the south. 2) From Barremian times, the southern faults delimitting the Oliete Subbasin (hangingwalls to the north) were active, giving maximum sediment thickness near the Montalbán anticline, which was a sedimentary high during alí the Early Crctaccous. A NE-SW fault set (with hangingwalls to thc SE) was responsible for changes of sediment thickness in the central part of the basin during the Early Cretaceous. The Tertiary NWSE (and some of the E-W and NE-SW) folds and thrusts, associated to alluvial fan syn-tectonic sedimentation, were the result of positive inversion of Mesozoic normal faults.Downloads
