Abstract

The paper deals on the Buntsandstein and Muschelkalk Facies of the 5 Castilian Branch of the Iberian, from Cueva de Hierro to Chelva (Cuenca and Valencia Provinces> (fig. 1). The type sections have been established and the facies divided in seven lithostratigraphic units, as well as several facies associations for each one (fig. 2). The Buntsandsíein facies have been interpreted as proximal to distal alluvial fan and braided river facies (fig. 3), and the Muschelkalk Facies as carbonatic tidal fíat and shallow shelf facies> with siliciclastics and evaporites at the top (fig. 4). The basin shows an initial graben stage of rapid subsidence (Buntsandstein facies> followed by a mature stage of slower thermal subsidence (Muschelkalk Facies> (fig. 5). 1.
