Nostalgia and the Survival of Mythical Stories in the Society of Interactive Spectacle. Videogames’ Relationship with their Past through Remakes

Keywords: remake, nostalgia, spectacle, Debord, Baudrillard

Abstract

This paper analyzes the appearance of video game remakes, questions the anthropological motivations for their current abundance and tests the validity of Guy Debord's theories on the society of the spectacle by applying them to this new context. Jean Baudrillard's theories are also used to propose the hypothesis that video games and their remakes overlap each other in an attempt to update their hyperreality. As examples, both aesthetic and playable changes in different videogames are analyzed.
