Abstract

Mythology is a constant source of literary material for the contemporary writer who finds in it timeless elements, which, nevertheless, resonate with new vibrations today. On this ground, this paper analyses the modern image of Cheoyong, a Korean mythical character whose origins date back to the late Silla period (9th century), in poets Shin Seok-Cho (1909-1975) and Kim Chunsu (1922-2004). In these poets' works, we can see a reformulation of the myth from a contemporary perspective and an adaptation of Cheoyong's character to the changing nature of modernity without losing the links with tradition.
