Ondine by Christian Petzold: waiting for development

Keywords: Ondine, Christian Petzold, naiads, Fouqué, bildungsroman

Abstract

The usual image of undines is that of evil beings, an idea that spread especially in the 19th century. However, the origins of this mythological character have a double face, since positive aspects can also be found. Undine by Christian Petzold, inspired by Fouqué's story, creates a new meaning for the figure of the undine based on this ambiguity and show it in two main aspects: the city of Berlin (of which its urban planning stands out) and love relationships (in which selfishness occupies a central place)
