Esotericism, Myth and Subversion in Alan Moore’s "Promethea"

Abstract

The aim of this article is to explore the intersection between esotericism and myth in Alan Moore’s Promethea. I will start with an approach to what we consider “esotericism”, followed by an exposition of the characteristics of Hermetism and its legacy, which are vital to understand Moore’s work. Finally, I will analyze the ending of the work in order to understand how the interaction between myth and esotericism take place.

Tras graduarme en Filología Clásica por la Universidad de Sevilla (2009-2013) y realizar el Máster Interuniversitario en Filología Clásica (UAM/UCM/UAH, 2013-2014), me doctoré en 2019 con la tesis «Hermes Trismegisto: de la mística a la fantasía. Pervivencia de los textos herméticos de la Antigüedad a nuestros días» bajo la dirección de Luis Unceta, en el marco del proyecto «Marginalia Classica Hodierna: Tradición y Recepción Clásicas en la cultura de masas contemporánea» (FFI2015-66942-P), del que fui miembro entre 2015 y 2019. En mi tesis analizo, desde los postulados de la Recepción Clásica, la manera en que la figura de Hermes Trismegisto y los textos herméticos han sido claves para la configuración de los géneros de la fantasía y la ciencia ficción de los siglos XIX, XX y XXI. Mi interés en la investigación sobre el mundo clásico es variado: me he centrado sobre todo en la recepción del mundo antiguo, pero también he publicado sobre temas de literatura latina en general. Me interesan, especialmente, las diversas formas de religiosidad de la Antigüedad tardía y su pervivencia posterior, así como la recepción de la Antigüedad en géneros como la ciencia ficción y la fantasía.

Actualmente, soy miembro del proyecto “Marginalia Classica Hodierna. Tradición y recepción clásica en la cultura de masas contemporáneas” (FF12015-66942-P; MINECO/FEDER).
