El presente dossier monográfico de la revista Thélème. Revista Complutense de Estudios Franceses es el fruto de la colaboración entre la Universidad de Le Mans (Facultad de Letras, Lenguas y Ciencias Humanas, Laboratorio 3L. AM) y la Universidad de Granada (Facultad de Traducción e Interpretación, grupo de investigación AVANTI), que surgió tras la celebración del coloquio internacional “Traducción y rehabilitación de voces olvidadas Francia-España/España-Francia, siglos XX-XXI”, que tuvo lugar en la Universidad de Le Mans los días 15 y 16 de febrero de 2024. Tal evento científico se sumaba así a otros organizados en Francia en los últimos años en torno a la traducción de voces olvidadas (véanse, por ejemplo, “Voces silenciadas en la Historia: traducción, género y (auto)censura”. Spanish gazes towards Francis Carco. A century of translations and reception

This article examines the history of the reception and translation of the work of French author Francis Carco in Spain. Considering the scarcity of comprehensive diachronic analyses, this case study advocates for the value of such an approach. To that end, it analyzes a range of texts from various genres and types, including reviews, journalistic publications, peritexts, censorship reports, and Carco’s own works in both French and Spanish. The analysis is organized into three periods: the 1920s–1930s, the Franco regime, and the democratic era. The hypothesis—partially confirmed—is that Carco was a well-known author during the first period, saw significantly reduced circulation during the second, and became the focus of recovery in the third.

Editorial recovery as a strategy for visibility: the case of Gabrielle Wittkop

This article analyses the possible recovery of Gabrielle Wittkop’s work (Nantes 1920 - Frankfurt 2002), an unknown Franco-German author and translator for Gallimard (Peter Handke, Uwe Johnson, Hermann Lins, Wolfgang Hildesmeier and Peter Faecke). Based on our interest in the recovery of forgotten contemporary voices and cultural transfers between France and Spain, we will examine, using a sociological methodology, the dissemination and reception of Gabrielle Wittkop’s work in Spain. On the one hand, we will give an account of the reasons that have relegated her work to silence in its original language. On the other hand, after a brief presentation of the different Spanish translations of her work –without going into translatological analysis–, and observing some relevant aspects of the Spanish publishing market, we will explain the Spanish publisher Cabaret Voltaire’s stake in this novelist.

Emilia Pardo Bazán: translation’s overview and writer’s image in France

This article offers an overview of the chronology of translations of the Spanish writer, known to date in 19 countries (1883-2023). It seeks to place France regarding other countries by highlighting certain aspects, in particular the genres and titles translated. The translation of a writer, whatever the country, whatever the era, depends largely on the image we have of him or her. Therefore, this article studies the evolution of Emilia Pardo Bazán’s image in the French press (1897-2020).

In this article, devoted to the publication of a bilingual anthology of short stories previously unpublished in French by the Spanish writer Emilia Pardo Bazán (1851-1921), we address the main difficulties of translation today, given the renewed interest in the author's work and, in particular, the relatively recent exposure of her feminist commitment, a commitment which structures the writing down to the smallest detail.

Introducing a Writer from the Spanish Generation of 1936 to France: the French Version of the Memoirs of Ildefonso-Manuel Gil

This article presents the study of the French translation of the Memoirs of Ildefonso-Manuel Gil, originally published in Zaragoza by Xordica in two books, in 1996 and 2000. The translation was published by the Presses de l’Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour in 2022. The study is divided into three sections and a brief conclusion. First, it justifies the selection of Gil and his two books, explaining the uniqueness of both the author’s personality and the selected texts, as well as the relevance of introducing them to a French-speaking audience. Next, it outlines the methodology used in translating both works. Finally, it examines the characteristics of the French translations of Gil’s books, highlighting the challenges posed by translating this genre. The study concludes with a brief summary of the results achieved following the publication of the translation.

Women and Translation in the Galician Literary System. Ideological and Literary Issues in the Recovery and Rehabilitation of Octave Mirbeau in Galician

Thanks to professional and non-professional translators from the academic world, translation has been consolidated as a privileged means of protest in a literary system where patriarchy has imposed its rules of operation and the canon since the 19th century. Translators, writers, researchers and editors participate in this dynamic of protest and subversion of traditionally accepted cultural representations, delegitimizing them.

In addition to commercial initiatives, they challenge the system, rehabilitating through translation forgotten or unknown voices in Galician literature. Octave Mirbeau, a writer excluded from the canon for almost a century is one of the voices recovered for the Galician system thanks to the personal initiative of his first woman translator, independent of any editorial intervention.

“Hoy encontré tu nombre”: María Cegarra Salcedo and the Recovery of Peripheral Women Poets Through Translation

María Cegarra Salcedo (1899-1993) is one of the female authors included in the Anthologie bilingue des poétesses de la Génération de 27 edited by Nuria Rodríguez Lázaro and Gilles del Vecchio, published in 2023, which includes chapters devoted to little-known or forgotten women poets, in addition to collecting pieces written by women who have received more attention, such as María Zambrano and Carmen Conde. The aim of this paper is to study the recovery of a peripheral female poet through her inclusion in an anthology dedicated to her generation. To this end, the first part outlines the vital and poetic trajectory of María Cegarra Salcedo. Secondly, the role of anthologies in the construction of the poetic canon linked to the generation of 27 is examined. Thirdly, the development of the chapter devoted to Cegarra is discussed, as well as the anthology’s distribution.

The bilingual edition of Versión celeste, by Juan Larrea, a mirroring collection of poetry

Juan Larrea (1895-1980), a poet in the orbit of the ‘Generación del 27’ without really being one, despite the admiration of Cernuda and the interest of Guillén, still retains his aura as the ‘father of Surrealism’ in Spain - a word that Bodini had coined for him. However, his bilingual collection of poems Versión Celeste, published in 1970, is the only one published in Spain. This date is late in relation to a body of poetic work that can be broadly placed between 1919 and 1932, when the choice of French as the language of poetry was confirmed. Our aim is to examine the ups and downs of this long-running publication, leading to a reflection on the poet's relationship with language and translation, through the ‘strangeness’ of the poetic language. To this end, the reflections offered by the translations, which come from different circumstances, are fertile avenues.

Las aventuras de Nono (Jean Grave, trans. Anselmo Lorenzo, 1902): Paradoxes of a Timeless Libertarian Children’s Book

In 1901, at the request of the libertarian educationalist Francisco Ferrer Guardia, Jean Grave wrote Las aventuras de Nono for young people. The novel sketches out an alternative society between Argyrocracy and Autonomy. Its translation into Spanish by Anselmo Lorenzo was immediately published by the École moderne in 1902. Published in France by Stock in 1901, Jean Grave's text was not republished until 2017 by Éditions Noir et Rouge (Paris). On the other hand, the translation was republished in Spain in 1980 by the publisher José J. de Olañeta (Barcelona), by MCA (Valencia) in 2000, then by Libertarias (Madrid) in 1991 and, more recently still, in 2013. We will try to understand why the voices of Jean Grave and Anselmo Lorenzo have continued to be heard in Spain for over a hundred years, surviving oblivion against a backdrop of mass production of novels for young people.

Indices, perception and evidentiality: the case of Spanish por lo visto and its French equivalence apparemment

The aim of this study is to analyze and discuss the functioning of Spanish discourse marker por lo visto from the point o view of evidentility and speaker’s commitment. In view of the problems encountered with the usual approaches, we propose a new model of explanation based upon the concept of index and its relation to the (de-)commitment of the speaker. The last part is devoted to compare por lo visto to its French equivalence apparemment as far as aspect is concerned.

Djavannian Spaces: A Narrative Geography of Exile and Identity in the Novels of Chahdortt Djavann

This article examines the narrative geography in Chahdortt Djavann’s novels, exploring how spaces—from Iran to France, through intermediate territories—structure the experience of exile and identity reconstruction. Drawing on the theories of Foucault (heterotopia), Augé (non-places), and Bhabha (third space), the study reveals three key dimensions: Iran as a traumatic space, where homes, prisons, and cities embody both patriarchal oppression and symbolic resistance; intermediate spaces (Istanbul, Dubai, transit zones), acting as laboratories of hybrid identities, exposing both the violence and potential of migratory journeys; and France, an ambivalent mirror where idealization clashes with disillusionment, torn between difficult integration and spatial marginalization. The article highlights the political significance of these spatial representations, where places become narrative operators that unveil mechanisms of domination and strategies of self-reinvention. This geocritical approach thus provides an original framework for understanding contemporary migration challenges.

Mahi Binebine: a poetics of resistance in the margins of Morocco

This article examines how Mahi Binebine, an emblematic writer of contemporary Moroccan literature, reinvents the margins of society through a bold exploration of the body, space and language. By analyzing his novels through the prism of these three axes, this study reveals how the author gives a voice to excluded figures, subverts national narratives and sheds light on the complex identity quests shaping Morocco today. The body, often marked by suffering, becomes a site of identity affirmation and resistance. Space, from shantytowns to places of detention, reveals social inequalities and power dynamics. Language, hybrid and mixed, reveals itself as a tool of subversion and reappropriation. This research enriches our understanding of this writer's work and sheds light on Morocco's social and political issues, inviting us to rethink notions of identity and belonging.

The myth of Theseus and Jean Cocteau’s Le discours du grand sommeil: Towards a mythocritical approach to this book of poems

Cocteau’s interest in myths is well known. In addition to Orpheus and Oedipus, which have haunted his writing throughout his career, in all artistic fields - poetry, theatre, film, drawing - the myth of Theseus often appears in his work to represent the ordeal of the creative act that takes place halfway between the ordinary world and a mysterious beyond (the labyrinth), where the poet may meet death, or between consciousness and the inner dedalic abysses. But in Le discours du grand sommeil, a collection of poems inspired by the Great War and his time on the Belgian front, myth emerges more or less implicitly to express not only the poet’s bitterness and his denunciation of the conflict, but also his compassionate view of the unjust and cruel sacrifice of so many dead soldiers.

Generic hybridity and stylistic innovation in Mohamed Leftah’s Au bonheur des limbes

The article aims to show that Mohamed Leftah's novelistic work does not lend itself to a traditional generic classification; his aesthetic of mixture reflects both the complexity of the characters, their psychological depth, and the diversity of reality. His work is fully in line with literary modernity. As a novelist, he has constantly sought to explore new avenues, to adopt innovative, distinct, and original writing strategies that reflect his inspirations and aspirations, his taste and temperament. His hybrid writing is characterized by a crossing of forms and a mixture of genres. It is a writing where poetry, myth, storytelling, polyphony, and humor intertwine. All of this gives Leftah's novels a unique and profoundly innovative identity. Thus, Leftahian aesthetics appears as a writing laboratory where formal experimentation serves a profoundly subversive purpose, both aesthetically and existentially.

Prefacio. La enseñanza de la gramática del francés en contextos multilingües

El papel que debe desempeñar la enseñanza de la gramática en el aprendizaje de lenguas ha sufrido numerosas vicisitudes desde la metodología tradicional (también denominada gramática-traducción) hasta nuestros días. Y si bien comenzó siendo la pieza angular en la enseñanza de idiomas, también pasó a ser denostada en los años 1960 y 1970 del pasado siglo debido al auge del enfoque comunicativo. En efecto, si lo primordial cuando se aprende una lengua es comunicarse y hacerse entender, ¿qué papel se debe asignar a la gramática? Y, sobre todo, si esta ha de enseñarse, ¿cómo afrontar la enseñanza gramatical en el aula de lenguas? En los últimos años, la enseñanza de la gramática ha resurgido con fuerza en las aulas de lenguas primeras y extranjeras, y su presencia como tal ya no se cuestiona. Lo que genera más debate en el ámbito de la investigación y de la praxis es determinar cómo integrarla de forma efectiva en la práctica docente para promover el aprendizaje significativo de los aprendientes (Camps y Zayas, 2006; Rodríguez-Gonzalo, 2024, 2021).

Encourage Pupils to Develop Conscious and Explicit Knowledge Through Grammatically Oriented Written Work. The Example of the Noun Phrase Complement

This paper analyses the filmed and transcribed practices of primary teachers experimenting with a grammar teaching sequence combining text-based activities with grammatical conceptualisation activities. The aim is to show how such text-based activities give meaning to grammatical learning, in this case the function of noun phrase complement, and contribute to its conceptualisation. In such activities, teachers point to the knowledge, first using designations taken from everyday language or from the world of the classroom, and then formalise the knowledge by using specific meta terms. We are betting that this to-and-fro between the pupils‘ implicit use of the language, in production or comprehension, their intuitive understanding of grammatical phenomena and the teachers’ mediation using specific meta terms will ultimately enable them to reorganise their internal language with regard to the grammatical objects taught.

Teaching grammatical revision strategies with the “Writer's Profile” device: description of teaching practices deemed effective by secondary school teachers in Quebec

For Quebec students, learning grammar revision strategies is key to academic success in writing. The “Profil de scripteur” (Writer’s Profile) tool combines four synergistic features that allow teachers to differentiate their instruction of these strategies to meet their students’ needs. This article describes the implementation practices reported by secondary school teachers (students age: 12-16). Results, collected via questionnaire and group interview, show that most of the teachers use three of the four tools. Teachers report that the “Profil de scripteur” helps them to better plan and teach revision strategies. However, they offer students a one-size-fits-all approach to self-correction rather than tailoring it to the needs observed with the “Profil de scripteur” tools. Six winning practices have been identified to help implement this system and shed light on classroom practices.

A Proposal for the Analysis of the Pronoun “en” to Improve its Acquisition by Spanish-speaking FFE Learners

The acquisition of the pronoun en is a challenge for EFL learners at all levels of linguistic competence. Although these difficulties are not exclusive to Spanish speakers, we will focus on explaining two of the most important difficulties in this area: the absence of translatological correspondence in Spanish and its syntactic heterogeneity and terminology. After a morphosyntactic analysis of the pronoun en and a bibliographical review of its acquisition, we describe two proposals aimed at optimising its acquisition in the Spanish-speaking environment: a syntactic and terminological simplification and an example of contextualisation of the pronoun en through literary extracts.

Written Composition and Interlinguistic Reflection in 1st Year Bilingual Primary Education (French-Spanish): Intervention by a Novice Teacher

This paper presents a study on the design and implementation of the EGRAMINT (SDGE) grammar teaching sequence “L'alimentation: À la recherche du menu parfait,” intended for first-year primary education students. The sequence focuses on the discursive genre “menu” and aims to develop metalinguistic and interlinguistic reflection among students in a French-Spanish bilingual school. The SDGE was implemented by a student teacher during her initial training. The specific objectives of the study are to explore the potential of this intervention device to promote reflective learning among students, examine achievements in children’s writing, and assess the successes and challenges of the teacher’s intervention. The conclusion highlights the need to strengthen initial and ongoing training of teachers in the field of grammar teaching.

Fostering Metalinguistic Reflection of 1st-year Compulsory Secondary Education Students in a Plurilingual Context

This article presents the results of the implementation of a grammar teaching sequence designed according to the Egramint prototype (SDGE) in a public school of the Valencian Community; in particular, it analyses the role of oral interaction in French and Spanish to bring out the students’ cross-linguistic metalinguistic reflection. The SDGE was implemented in the 1^st-year Compulsory Secondary Education French as a Second Foreign Language classroom and dealt with audiodescription and the linguistic forms required by this discursive genre (present indicative, adjectives). Classroom recordings of interactions between pupils and with the teacher, their productions and an interview with the teacher show that oral interaction does indeed promote metalinguistic reflection on the functioning of all the languages the pupils know. Through exploratory speaking, and thanks to the scaffolding provided by the teacher throughout the sessions, the pupils construct meanings on the basis of joint reflection.

Tecnología y comunicación mediática al servicio de la innovación docente en FLE (Eurrutia Cavero y Gil Casadomet, 2025) es un trabajo conjunto que analiza, desde una perspectiva multidisciplinar, los cambios que experimenta la instrucción del francés como segundo idioma (FLE) en el entorno universitario contemporáneo, caracterizado por el crecimiento de las tecnologías digitales y la inteligencia artificial. Durante doce capítulos, los escritores y escritoras examinan métodos pedagógicos innovadores que incorporan recursos digitales en auge, métodos colaborativos, dinámicas interculturales y visiones discursivas críticas, siempre manteniendo un compromiso evidente con la inclusión, la multimodalidad y la adaptación a los nuevos entornos sociotecnológicos.

La disposición del volumen facilita una lectura estructurada en tres grandes secciones temáticas: la primera analiza el efecto de la inteligencia artificial generativa y otras tecnologías en la enseñanza del FLE; la segunda, las técnicas de colaboración y motivación, y la tercera, las prácticas culturales y discursivas implementadas. Resaltan propuestas educativas fundamentadas en la generación de contenidos, la aplicación de plataformas interactivas, la elaboración de podcasts, el estudio de mitos en línea o la reflexión acerca del bilingüismo.

El libro proporciona un balance sólido entre la teoría y la práctica, con vivencias principalmente del contexto hispanohablante, y se muestra como un recurso esencial para investigadores, profesores y diseñadores de currículos que buscan actualizar sus métodos pedagógicos. Es una contribución significativa que coloca al FLE en el núcleo de las discusiones educativas actuales acerca de la innovación, la tecnología y la mediación cr´ítica.
