Medialab Prado as a citizen laboratory in the technocultural, urban and architectural context

Abstract

Medialab Prado was an international reference institution dedicated to the democratisation of technoculture. Instead of adopting a traditional exhibition model, it promoted cultural production as an open and permeable process. This article explores the elements that made this space unique, underlining the importance of the relationship between its architecture, spatial management and citizen laboratories. Starting with a brief history of its origin, it delves into the evolution of the laboratory concept to the citizen laboratory model, analysing its technocultural, urban and architectural context. Furthermore, its spatial properties are explored in dialogue with the ideas of an ‘open city’ proposed by Richard Sennett (2019) in Building and living: Ethics for the city, concluding with the key learnings that emerge from this emblematic case.

Author Biographies

Francisco García-Triviño, University of Alcalá

Researcher and lecturer based in Madrid. He focuses his research on the relationship between architecture and animals. He holds a doctorate in architecture from the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid and is interested in architectural ethnography as a working method, as well as in the processes of citizen participation in science.
He has directed the research project "Architecture and urban fauna. Integration, conservation and promotion of animal biodiversity in historical monumental spaces" https://avecinasdealcala.web.uah.es/ He has co-directed the citizen innovation project "Relatos en la Espera" in the framework of the European project Doing It Together Science. He is founder and co-director of the indexed journal HipoTesis Serie Numerada and the experimental journal HipoTesis Serie Alfabética (since 2009). Since 2015 he co-directs the architecture studio Kune Office, from where he practices around co-production. He has been awarded the FAD Prize for Thought and Criticism 2016 and the SEK Prize for Educational Innovation 2018.

Aikaterini Evangelia Psegiannaki, Autonomous University of Madrid

Katerina Psegiannaki ha estudiado arquitectura en la Universidad Demócrito de Tracia en Grecia (2005) y es Doctora Arquitecta por la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (2015). Actualmente es profesora en el Departamento de Educación Artística, Plástica y Visual de la Facultad de Formación de Profesorado y Educación de la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid donde dirige proyectos de Innovación Docente bajo la filosofía “DIY” y mediante el uso de herramientas y metodologías de la cultura Maker. Sus líneas de investigación giran alrededor de los procesos de creación colaborativos en los ámbitos de la educación formal, el diseño, las artes y la arquitectura. Fue promotora del proyecto “La casa como casa de muñecas”, en la convocatoria pública realizada por “Juguetoría 2021” en Medialab-Matadero, y del proyecto "Relatos en la espera" en la convocatoria pública de “Interactivos17” en Medialab-Prado cuyo resultado fue finalista en los premios Xataka de tecnología 2017.
