Unmasking women’s anger in fourth-wave feminism: A case study of The power series

Abstract

This video essay delves into the multifaceted representation of women’s anger, exploring both its subjective and activist dimensions within the science-fiction series The power (2023). The series narrates the emergence of a transformative new power among young women worldwide altering established power dynamics. The primary objective of this essay is to unveil the evolving portrayal of angry women in contemporary audiovisual fiction, challenging the villain stereotype, and the relationship that this change has
with the latest feminist movements. The analysis shows the intricate treatment of the ambivalence of rage as power, advocating for the cultural acceptance of women’s expression of rage. This acceptance can foster the vital social support and protection that they need.

Esther Marín Ramos es profesora de Cambio Social y tendencias de futuro en el grado de sociología de la Universidad de Alicante. Su trayectoria interdisciplinar, como licen-ciada en ciencias de la información y doctora en sociología, marcan una línea de inves-tigación centrada en el análisis del cambio social a través de la ficción audiovisual, desde la perspectiva de la cultura popular y feminista. Ha escrito el ensayo La (Re)evolución social a través del cine: argumentos cinematográficos en la crisis de la modernidad (Alfons el Magnánim, 2018) y conjuga su labor académica con la crítica cultural y el análisis divulgativo de cine y series de ficción.
