When female rage is not feminist: Discursive manipulation and polarization
Abstract
This qualitative discourse analysis delves into the parliamentary intervention of Vox deputy Carla Toscano, who discussed the budget of the Ministry of Equality in the Spanish Government and the implications of the “Only yes is yes” law. The response of the Minister of Equality, Irene Montero, is also examined. The article investigates the discursive construction of female rage, revealing its possible transformative character. To do so, we will apply the analytical and theoretical model articulated around the concept of women’s anger competence. This theoretical framework will allow us to include an approach to discursive polarization developed by Teun Van Dijk (2005). Our findings highlight a polarized discourse. The portrayal of non-feminist female anger perpetuates a narrative that questions the impact of feminism on men’s rights.
