Digital technology and higher education in the context of the pandemic

Abstract

This text addresses the issues affecting the construction of emerging forms of social relations in the context of the development of digital technology, in particular social networks and multimedia and tridimensional collaborative spaces. The discussion is set in the context of higher education during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath. The article considers psychosocial effects in the context of the rapid changes associated with new forms of social coexistence and management of educational processes. Consequences for individual cognitive process are also discussed, as well as changes in institutional policies that may lead to the transformation of the university as a social and educational institution.

Author Biography

Heidi J. Figueroa Sarriera, University of Puerto Rico System

Heidi J. Figueroa-Sarriera is a community social psychologist, professor at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus. Her research area is focused on digital technology and  the transformations of everyday life, subjectivity, and the body. She co-authored several books on cyberculture and cyborgs, and published articles on the cyborg imaginary, the domotic environment, new forms of community and gender issues, among others. Her latest book is Imaginarios de sujeto en la Era Digital. Post(identidades) contemporáneas (Subject's Imaginaries in the Digital Era. Contemporaries Post(identities) published in 2017 by CIESPAL, Quito.
