Political Mannerism: Hobbes and the harmony of the irregular
Abstract
The essay is an analysis of Hobbes’ thought by means of the aesthetic code of Mannerism and Baroque. It is thus possible to highlight breaks and ambiguity in the Hobbesian construction of the State, which make the nihilistic interpretation (which underlines Hobbesian artificialism and conventionalism) problematic. Starting from the conventionalism and giving importance to the allegories –mirror and monster-animal– used by Hobbes, traces of the terrestrial and immanent rooting to life can be identified in his thought, which can prepare the way for what will be the biopolitical turn of power.
