Abstract

In this article the author traces the evolution of the concept of «pretence_ in the Hispanic Middle Ages. She explains its relationship with hypocrisy and with friendship and loyalty, she considers exemplary pretence, and she analyses the gradual tendency to distinguish between pretence and dissemblance. Finally, she points to the appearance at the end of the Middle Ages of a virtuous dissemblance.
