Capitalism and Reform. The Debate on Ownership in Post-war British Socialism
Abstract
The so-called "post-war settlement" was one of the greatest institutional transformations in European history, shaping the channels of European politics for several decades. This article first provides a description of the basic foundations of the pact, with a particular focus on the British case. Second, it addresses the British socialist debate engendered by this reform of capitalism. The challenge from Labour's right wing was contested by members of the Communist Party of Great Britain and the first New Left. The article reconstructs the arguments of the debate with particular attention to the contested concepts of "democracy", "property" and "socialism".
