Otto Pless: “a patriarch photographer and warrior”
Abstract
The Spanish Civil War photographic collection of the Biblioteca Nacional de España is made up of more than 40,000 photographic positives that bring together the images taken by both sides between 1936 and 1939. Within this extensive collection, which includes works by the leading photojournalists of the time, only seven photographs identified with the Foto Oples stamp have been preserved. But despite the small number of existing copies, the photographic work of the author behind this signature is of great interest, as his graphic work has been preserved in some of the main publications of the period. The aim of this work is to compile the photographic work of Otto Pless, the German photographer responsible for the firm Foto Oples, and to reconstruct the circumstances of his time in Spain during the turbulent 1930s.
