Abstract

The writing system used by the Aztec state is characterized not only by a familiar combination of logograms and phonograms, but also by the skilful -and playful- use of non-formal visual and graphic games to reinforce, enhance or add (and even alter) the meaning of a sign or combination of signs. Examples of the different types of mechanisms used for these purposes are presented in the article.
