Juan Bautista Marcaida, a Spanish businessman in the 19th Century Philippines (1823-1871)
Abstract
The present article analyzes the life of Juan Bautista Marcaida, a Manila businessman of Basque origin who, in the mid-19th century, had interests in the industrial and agricultural sectors of the Philippines and was involved in the trafficking of Asian workers. Through this case, we will make an approach to the relations of businessmen based in the Philippines with the colonial State, to the modes of socialisation of these business men and to their reactions to a changing economic panorama.
