Abstract

Various social and professional contexts entail specific emotional experiences linked to particular interactional situations. In this article, I aim to analyze the emotional repertoire experienced by police officers. Exploring the experiences of vulnerability that operate beneath police authority, I have reviewed ethnographic materials from different research studies in the security and Police field in Madrid. Among the findings, I firstly delve into the most common experiences of vulnerability in police work, which are related to three types of situations: tension, pressure, and critical judgment. Secondly, I analyze the different strategies deployed to cope with this vulnerability: those that reinforce the esprit de corps and transform criticisms into feelings of police pride, and those that involve a certain subjective transformation through an approach to "soft" methodologies inherent to social work and engagement with academic references.
