Abstract

This research work focuses on the analysis of bioindicators as tools for the control and monitoring of environmental quality in multiple areas at an international level. It reviews their origins, their most representative qualities and examples of successful results. Having dealt with the subject in a generic way, the article places special emphasis on one of the bioindicators with the greatest potential, whose use and study has increased considerably over the last few decades: lichens. Being aware of its virtues in relation to the analysis of atmospheric pollution, but alluding to another type of future correlation that can be expanded through the levels of lichen biodiversity and other types of socioeconomic variables.
