Abstract
The following review will focus on the book Japan in the Early Modern World: Religion, Translation, and Transnational Relations, edited by Katja Triplett, Yoshimi Orii and Pia Jolliffe (2025). Through a series of distinct, yet interconnected and outstanding chapters, the contributors offer a new historiographical perspective on the interconnections between Europeans and the Japanese in the Early Modern period. The research is underpinned by the dynamic cultural synthesis that developed between Jesuits, Japanese and European intermediaries through a continuous process of exchange, translation and materialisation – particularly in books – of social, artistic, political, religious, historical, anthropological and linguistic elements, among others. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of religion, primarily Christianity, as a pillar, mediator and unifying force in these interactions between different, sometimes conflicting, parties. Nevertheless, this does not imply that objectivity was paramount in these material and immaterial translations, each of which differed from the others in purpose and form.
