Abstract

Since its conquest by Romans until the middle of the 1st century BC, Carthago Nova has been considered as a civitas stipendiaria. However, it is hard to accept this legal condition for such a community both strategically important and rich in resources. The analysis of epigraphically recorded onomastics of its inhabitants let us formulate the hypothesis of the promotion to Latin colony, which would reconcile not only the geostrategic features of the site, but also the constant appearance of duo/ tria nomina onomastic structures recorded in the city, which cannot be isolated from their own legal implications.
