Voice and Formula in Roman Metrical Epigraphy: The Unpublished Epitaph of Gaius Furnius Primigenius
Abstract
This article presents the edition and analysis of an unpublished Latin metrical inscription from Rome. The text enriches the corpus of Latin epigraphic poetry with a concise yet emotionally charged funerary carmen. Through a first-person voice, the inscription evokes memory, addresses the living, and reflects on the inevitability of death. The study offers a critical reading of the text, examines its language and structure, and situates it within the broader context of Roman verse epigraphy, with particular attention to its literary features and affective tone.
