A Cartography of HIV and AIDS: Archives, Memories, Representations and Narratives

Abstract

The dossier approaches HIV and AIDS as cultural, political, and affective phenomena shaped by disputes over representation, memory, and resistance. From an interdisciplinary and intersectional perspective, the collected contributions examine archives, narratives, and artistic productions related to HIV/AIDS across different contemporary contexts. Through studies focused on media, cinema, photography, literature, music, activism, and oral memory, the issue explores tensions between stigma, visibility, and self-representation, as well as the ways affected communities have produced counter-narratives against hegemonic discourses. Overall, the dossier proposes understanding HIV/AIDS beyond its biomedical dimension by addressing its social, cultural, and political implications in contemporary societies.

Author Biographies

Antonio A. Caballero Gálvez, Rey Juan Carlos University

Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Sociology, and member of the Diversity Unit at Rey Juan Carlos University. His research focuses on the representation of gender and sexualities in contemporary audiovisual media and social networks. He is a member of the consolidated research group Sexualities and Gender from an Interdisciplinary Perspective and the high-performance research group Media and Political Communication at Rey Juan Carlos University.

Natalia Cocciarini, National University of Rosario

Professor at the Faculty of Humanities and Arts at the National University of Rosario. Her research focuses on archives and discursive practices related to sexual countercultures and post-pornography from a socio-historical and cultural perspective. She is co-director of the Master’s Degree in Socio-cultural History and a member of the University Program on Sexual Diversity at the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies of the National University of Rosario.

Raul Anthony Olmedo Neri, National Autonomous University of Mexico

Full-time Research Professor at the Center for Communication Sciences Studies in the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). His research interests include cultural studies, LGBT+ studies, digital activism, ICTs, and everyday life. He is a member of the Mexican Association of Communication Researchers (AMIC) and the Latin American Association of Communication Researchers (ALAIC).
