Abstract

The literary topos of love seafaring (navigium amoris) can be defined as the identification or comparison between love and seafaring. It includes a set of six submotifs: double quality of Aphrodite-Venus, comparison of sexual relationship to sailing or rowing, comparison of woman and/or love to sea, the love tempest, arrival to harbor and votive offering. In this paper the presence of the love seafaring topos in Flores de poetas ilustres de España (1605) is surveyed. Up to 15 poems in the anthology develop the topos. It works as a contract of intertextuality (pointing to Petrarchan poetry), and as an identifier of the programmatic nature of the collection.
