The literature of the margins and its contribution to Spanish Gothic literature: Agustín Pérez Zaragoza
Abstract
Agustín Pérez Zaragoza’s work is possibly the highest expression of what has been labeled "Spanish Gothic". His stories, mostly compiled, translated and adapted from Anglo-Saxon literature, represent a good foray into the characteristics of Gothic. In this paper, we will look at The home of a parricide or the triumph of remorse from his Funeral Gallery to reevaluate the literature of the margins, a category mainly consumed by women. In addition, we will identify elements that the story shares with Gothic literature in general and those that are typical of so-called "Spanish Gothic", a genre influenced by the grotesque, sublime and macabre reality of eighteenth-century Spanish society.
