Abstract

The objective of the article is twofold. On the one hand, it aims to participate in the old dispute about the role that the man conceived as an individual has played in the construction of the social order of modernity. And, on the other, to do it based on the contributions of Andrés Bilbao on the subject, as reflected in his posthumous work. In order to unravel its meaning we contrast his ideas with those of the French anthropologist L. Dumont and draw from this comparison some interesting conclusions. A good knowledge of the origins of the modern social order always leads to better understanding of the problems of the present.
