Linguistic ideologies and gender-inclusive language: representation of ideologemes in the digital discourse of the Argentine press (2018-2024)
Abstract
The aim of our article is twofold: 1) to identify and analyze the linguistic ideologemes that shape the discursive representation of gender-inclusive language in the digital press; 2) to explore the linguistic ideologies underpinning the practice of gender-inclusive language, which has emerged as one of the most controversial issues of the 21st century for bringing patriarchal and heteronormative ideology to the forefront of the discussion, rather than merely focusing on questions of linguistic normativity. For the analysis, we selected, from the DISMUPREN-PANHIS corpus, journalistic texts about inclusive language published between 2018 and 2024 in Argentina. The results show the interaction within digital media discourse about inclusive language between different ideologemes –for example, between ‘the Spanish language is perfect and complete’ and ‘Spanish is a neutral language’– and between different linguistic ideologies, such as the view of language as a sociopolitical instrument and the ideology of linguistic relativity.
