Physical violence and aesthetic oppression: neologisms about dysmorphia and eating disorders in the Spanish-language digital press
Abstract
Image culture and beauty standards are closely linked to many physical and mental health problems, most of which are referred to in the media and on social networks using neologisms and expressions that are disseminated by journalists. The aim of this study is to highlight the physical violence and aesthetic oppression that affect women, and increasingly men, through the neologisms that are created and/or disseminated through the Spanish-language digital press. To this end, 153 neologisms related to body dysmorphia and/or eating disorders have been recorded, classified, and defined. Knowing these terms helps us not only to detect cultural changes, but also to raise awareness and prevent social problems that affect the physical and mental health of those who suffer from them.
