Construction, performance and defence of masculinity in the Rubiales case: a corpus-assisted multimodal critical discourse analysis
Abstract
This paper is framed within the DiscMasc project and presents a case study of the controversy surrounding the former president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Luis Manuel Rubiales Béjar, following a series of incidents in which he was involved during the final of the Women’s World Cup held in Australia on 20 August 2023. In particular, it aims to examine the discursive strategies employed by Rubiales to construct, perform and defend his masculinity. The textual and multimodal material under study is based on both press releases and official speeches, used to investigate how the public figure uses his language to construct and defend his masculine identity. The corpus-assisted multimodal critical discourse analysis provides a range of argumentative, persuasive and non-verbal resources employed by Rubiales to rehabilitate his public image as a wounded man and justify his sexist behaviour, in line with the discursive patterns of hegemonic masculinity.
