Abstract
Optical telegraphy began in Spain as in the rest of Europe at the end of 18th century, but it was soon discontined. A second phase began around 1830, but it also ended in failure. Finally, in 1844, the construction of the optical towers network was undertaken, as the rapid news was recognized as a necessity to guarantee public order. This article deals with the Spanish devices in each stage and their functional characteristics.##submission.format##
