Abstract
In this paper are analysed the texts edited by Francesca Malagnini, Il Lazzaretto nuovo di Venezia. Le scritture parietali, (Firenze, Franco Cesati, 2017). The authors of the surviving wall inscriptions (and drawings) from XVI-XVII centuries are mainly semiliterate porters, most of them hired from the western area of the Republic of Venice, the Val Sabbia, not far from Brescia (Lombardy). The subjects of the short surviving texts include official fragments adapted to the low competence of the writers, several occurrences of stereotyped expressions, well-wishing sentences, work information. Texts are characterized by different linguistic levels and by areal variation, from Venice to Val Sabbia. Family names and place names show the same features.Format
