Abstract

The Epistulae ad Familiares of Cicero have been of interest to many humanists since their discovery, not only as a unique testimony to know the figure of Cicero, but also as a model for the elaboration of letters and as a tool for the teaching of Latin in the studia humanitatis. A result of this interest was the numerous editions since the editio princeps of 1467, which made it one of the most printed classical works of the Renaissance. Despite its wide diffusion, there are still editions that have gone unnoticed by philologists. One example is the partial edition of the work printed in Barcelona in 1578 by Sansón Arbús, which is practically unknown and has not been included in the main catalogs. Only the OPAC catalog offers an entry on the edition and its only preserved copy, located in the Biblioteca Civica Romolo Spezioli in Fermo (Italy). After analyzing the impact of Fam. in the Renaissance and its inclusion in Latin curricula, we present the material description of the copy and the edition, and aim to offer a contribution to the textual form it presents and the publishing tradition to which it belongs.
