Ovidian verses in El licenciado Vidriera
Abstract
In El licenciado Vidriera we find three Latin quotations from Ovid. From the editio princeps (1613) onwards, those verses have appeared in editions up to the present day with different formulations. We explain those verses’ textual history in the Latin editions of Ovid. We also review the history of the textual conformations of these verses in the editions of El licenciado Vidriera from the princeps to our days, explaining the strategies used by the different editors. Finally, we offer our own proposal and explain that Cervantes takes these texts from a work by Tomaso Garzoni entitled Piazza Universale di tutte le professioni del mondo.
