Abstract

The aim of this paper is to approach the polygraphism of medieval diplomas from the perspective of the grammatical training acquired by scribes in writing and pronunciation. To this end, we first select passages from late-antique and medieval grammatical works on the relationship between writing and pronunciation in order to specify the phonographic rules that would constitute the scribes' basic grammatical competence. Secondly, an illustrative analysis is offered of the way in which these rules are used for the notation of non-Latin onomastics in 11th and 12th century diplomas of Irache.
