Abstract

This demarcation of the meaning of ἀσέβεια in Aeschylus’ tragedies has been made through analysis of its context and relationship with other elements. An ἀσεβής offense is committed personally and willingly against a god, a ξένος or a relative. This offense is contrary to θέμις, and it relentlessly attracts Ἐρινύες, who are represented in different ways. This scheme helps to explain or clarify certain passages or issues that have traditionally been a source of controversy.
